Tragedy Strikes the Alps: Two Basque Climbers Lose Their Lives on Mont Blanc’s Treacherous Slopes

PARIS.- Two Spanish mountaineersaged 26 and 27, died yesterday Wednesday on one of the peaks of the Mont-Blanc massifin the French Alpsauthorities reported.

The accident occurred in the afternoon, when the rope that the climbers were holding on to came loose for unknown reasons from a height of about 100 meters during a rappel in the Gervasutti corridorsaid a spokesman for the Gendarmerie de Haute Montagne Platoon (PGHM) in Chamonix.

A third member of the group, also Spanish, was unharmed but is seriously injured, he added, although he could not provide details about the identities or where the climbers came from.

And Rescue helicopter was able to recover the bodies of the deceased during the afternoon to transfer them to the city of Chamonix (east), capital of the French Alps.

The accident occurred when the climbers were descending from the summit of Mont-Blanc du Tacul (4,248 metres), one of the peaks that make up the Mont Blanc massif, which at 4,805 metres high is the highest peak in Western Europe.

On the 5th, one mountaineer died and four others were injured on the French side of the Mont-Blanc massif when a group of ice floes (séracs) fell, affecting a total of 15 climbers from various groups.
