“Tragedy strikes: Lightning kills 5 and injures 15 during soccer game in El Tambo, Cauca”

During the followingnoon of April 15, a tragedy occurred in El Tambo, Cauca. A lightning strike left five people dead and 15 more people injured who had to be transferred to different medical centers.

According to Uber Astaiza, vice president of the community action board of Loma Larga, he assured that everything happened when “we were in a championship in which there were regarding 500 people and that was when that thunder fell and this already happened.”

The flash hit a tree and then a loud explosion was heard and dozens of people fell to the ground, smoke emanating from some.

“There they were all lying on the floor, even other players who were there ran to pick them up and take them to the hospital,” added Uber Astaiza.

This was confirmed by Manuel Alejandro Peña, Secretary of Health of El Tambo, who pointed out that “they were the ones who immediately, in private cars and on some motorcycles, brought all the injured to the municipal seat.”

Regarding this incident, it was also known that three men, another adult and a minor under 15 years of age died instantly when they were transferred to the local hospital.

What is known regarding the state of health of the injured

At the moment it is known that the people who were injured following the lightning strike are still stunned by the devastating discharge.

Leonard Ramírez, care coordinator at the El Tambo hospital, indicated that “15 injured people, including five minors, have already received initial care at the institution and, given the health complications, they were referred to a higher level.”

Additionally, he assured that there is an adult female patient who is in critical condition.

After what happened, the Mayor of El Tambo and relief organizations coordinated the deployment of personnel and 10 ambulances to transfer the injured to Popayán.

“Strike injuries cause electrolyte disorders, heart, liver, and kidney problems, and at our institution we do not have the complexity to care for them,” added Leonard Ramírez.

The 15 injured are in Popayán, a woman in intensive care, four pending surgery, the others receive care for burns and remain under observation.
