A horrific accident occurred on the 25th at the “The Geong” glass bridge, a tourist hotspot in Central Java, Indonesia. While 11 tourists were crossing, the glass bridge deck suddenly shattered under their feet, causing four of the tourists to fall and one person to die. The authorities are investigating the detailed reasons for the fatal accident that occurred on the bridge only half a year following it was opened.

Comprehensive foreign media reports indicate that The Geong Bridge, which has a glass deck and piers decorated in the shape of Buddha’s hands, suffered a crack at around 10 a.m. that day. Four of the 11 tourists on the bridge fell from the bridge deck. Two of them were rescued by holding on to the glass frame, and the other was lucky enough to get stuck in a hole and survived. However, one person directly hit the ground from the nearly 10-meter-high bridge and died.

It is reported that as early as when the glass bridge opened in April, Ekop Purnomo, chairman of the local forestry cooperative organization, expressed concerns regarding the safety of the bridge and said that 5% of tourists raised many questions following visiting, but the unit responsible for the Geong Bridge Decline his invitation to discuss security.

Preliminary investigation by the police pointed out that the thickness of the bridge’s glass was only 1.2 centimeters, which was far below the safety standard of 5 centimeters. The safety frame also did not meet the standards, and there was no safety net under the bridge. The operator has not done any safety testing. In other words, the bridge should actually be closed to tourists, but the operator has not set up any signboards, nor provided any safety training or instructions to employees.
