A roller coaster has partially derailed at an amusement park in Stockholm, Sweden, killing one person and injuring nine others, British daily Guardian reported on the 25th (local time).
According to the Guardian, the first train of the roller coaster ‘Zeline’, which opened at 11:30 am at Gröna Lund, which opened in 1883 and is considered the oldest amusement park in Sweden, derailed and crashed on the 6-8m high track.
“One of the 14 passengers on board died and several were injured in the accident,” said Jan Eriksson, CEO of the amusement park.
Local authorities said nine people were injured, one of them in critical condition. He also explained that three of the injured were children and their lives were not threatened.
Witnesses said that the wheels of the front part of the train came off the track and then fell off another train and crashed, along with passengers on that train.
One of the eyewitnesses, Jennu Lagerstedt, said: “At the time of the accident, I heard a loud noise.
The roller coaster ‘Zeline’ has a total length of 800m, a maximum height of 30m, and a maximum speed of 90km/h. It started operating in 1988 and underwent renovation work in 2000. It is known that more than 1 million people have enjoyed ‘Zeline’ every year.
Gröna Lund said that all visitors were evacuated following the accident and that the amusement park would be closed for seven days to investigate the cause of the accident.
“We will never operate a ride unless we are sure it is safe,” said spokeswoman Gröna Lund.
The AP reported that the local police are currently in the process of launching an investigation into charges such as negligent manslaughter on the job.
