Tragedy Strikes as Bus Overturns Near Vryheid: ANC Members Killed in South Africa Accident

JOHANNESBURG, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) — Eight people were killed and dozens injured following a bus they were traveling in overturned near Vryheid in Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province on Saturday from the South, authorities announced on Sunday.

The passengers were returning from the province’s Moses Mabhida Stadium, where the ruling African National Congress (ANC) presented its manifesto for the upcoming elections.

“Police and various emergency services are at the scene of the bus accident on the R33 between Vryheid and Paulpietersburg in Kwazulu-Natal province,” police said in a statement. “According to a preliminary report, the bus was coming from Moses Mabhinda Stadium when it overturned. Eight people were confirmed dead and dozens more injured. The injured were taken to different hospitals in the area to receive medical care.

The ANC said those involved in the accident were its members from Mpumalanga province.

“There are reportedly several deaths and a number of comrades in critical condition. It is a true tragedy that there is such a loss of life following such a memorable day. Their self-sacrifice and commitment will always be remembered to build a better future for generations to come,” lamented the ANC in a press release.

Police said they were investigating the circumstances of the accident. END
