Tragedy on Quibdó-Medellín Highway: Updates, Victims, and Relief Efforts

The Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences reported that to date it has received 35 fatal victims of the tragedy that occurred this weekend on the Quibdó – Medellín highway. Of the 35 deceased, the Institute announced that 33 have already been reliably identified and 23 have been handed over to their families.

Forensic Medicine also reported that technical and scientific work is still continuing to identify all the victims.

“From the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences we join the voices of solidarity and accompany the families in this moment of deep pain,” the entity indicated in a statement.

Meanwhile, relief agencies and authorities continue the work of removing earth and searching for those missing following the collapse. So far and according to the community itself, eight people are missing, a figure that might increase as the hours go by and would increase the number of fatalities following the tragedy.

The critical conditions of the terrain plus the heavy rainfall in the last few hours have made it difficult to track down the victims; More than 200 public officials and relief organizations from the departments of Antioquia and Chocó participate in the maneuvers.

Governor Nubia Carolina Córdoba indicated that they will not move from the field until they find all those affected: “We will not rest until we all have information regarding our family members and loved ones. May God be with us.” At the moment, the road is closed while the search continues and probable emergencies are mitigated.

For now, the authorities’ call to the population in the area is to comply with the recommendations of the rescue forces and the authorities, since new landslides in the area are not ruled out.
