At least 34 bodies of illegal migrants have been recovered off the coast of Libya since the sinking of a boat trying to reach Europe illegally on Wednesday, according to the Libyan Red Crescent.

In a final report, the Libyan Red Crescent announced on Monday that it had found 11 new bodies in the town of Sabratha, west of Tripoli.

In a first count, the same source reported the discovery of 17 bodies, following being informed of the sinking of a boat off Sabratha.

Tunisian and Libyan territorial waters are considered a transit zone for most illegal migrant boats bound for Europe.

Nearly 2,000 migrants went missing or drowned in the Mediterranean last year, compared to 1,401 in 2020, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The central Mediterranean is the most dangerous migratory route in the world, according to this organization, which estimates that more than 18,000 migrants have died or disappeared there since 2014. (With MAP)
