Around 4:30 p.m. on Friday August 18, two shots were heard by several residents of rue du Roi Albert in Oupeye, in the Liège region. According to the first information transmitted to us by witnesses of the scene, a policeman would have fired two bullets in the back of a young man who was riding a quad. Domenico, 22, was a youngster from Oupeye. He had a little girl of almost 2 years old.
Very quickly, a crowd formed around the scene because the young man was no longer moving. What happened ? The local authorities were immediately notified, as was the Liège public prosecutor’s office, which dispatched a magistrate to the scene; a doctor was also appointed.
A youth from Oupeye
According to the first elements that might be confirmed to us, it was following a check that the incident occurred. The young man, who was riding a quad, would have refused to comply… and would not have hesitated to rush towards the policeman, injuring him in the process.
His colleague, a direct witness of the scene, would then have fired in the direction of the pilot in order to stop the race of the latter…
Many street residents heard the shots and came out of their homes to film the arrival of numerous police cars, parked near the scene.
The firefighters, the SMUR had descended on the scene, as well as the Liège public prosecutor’s office and the municipal authorities. Around 5:10 p.m., a doctor attended the scene. A few minutes later, the body of the deceased victim was covered.
For his part, the policeman struck by the quad was transported, injured, to the hospital. We do not know, at the time of writing these lines, his state of health.
An investigation is opened. It should shed light on the exact circumstances that led to this tragedy.
Des tensions
Following the announcement of the death, several family members, as well as friends of the deceased young man went to the scene. According to witnesses, tempers would have heated between the police and the young people.
Indeed, “young people stoned combis”, indicated the parquet floor of Liège. The Liège firefighters also had to intervene following offenders set fire to a tree.
Witnesses to the events speak of “riots”, the neighboring police zones have in any case had to send reinforcements to help their colleagues in Basse-Meuse to ease the tensions.
Serge Fillot, mayor of Oupeye, indicated that “the police had to, in particular, use tear gas and fire engines to disperse the demonstrators”. The tensions took place between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. and were concentrated around the Château d’Oupeye. The mayor added that “no police officer was injured but that some citizens and agents are shocked by the situation”. A dozen people were arrested.
“I’ve never seen that in Oupeye, it’s real urban guerrillas and riots that we have witnessed”, regrets Serge Fillot. “Traps were set up to trap the police, molotov cocktails were used to avenge the death of the young man,” he laments.
Tensions eased around 3 a.m. and by Saturday morning everything was back to normal. Municipal teams clear the streets of various debris and a debriefing meeting is scheduled for 11 a.m. between the municipal authorities and the police. “The police have never witnessed scenes of such violence once morest them,” concluded the mayor.
