Community in Shock After Tragic Death of Young Girl in New Ross
A wave of grief has washed over the close-knit community of New Ross following the violent death of an eight-year-old girl at her family’s home.
The child, identified locally as Malikika Al Katib, tragically passed away in the early hours of yesterday morning at University Hospital Waterford, following a terrifying incident at the family’s home on William Street on Sunday night.
News of Malikika’s death sent shockwaves through the town.
Sources indicate the alarm was raised shortly before midnight after emergency services received a call reporting multiple people suffering stab wounds at the property. The Gardaí’s Armed Support Unit was immediately dispatched to the scene due to the severity of the reported situation.
Upon arrival, the ASU members provided emergency medical treatment to the young girl before she was transported to University Hospital Waterford. Her parents were also treated for wounds sustained in the incident.
While the man (34) and woman (31) are understood to be recovering well at the hospital, the tragedy has carte blanche out a sense of unspeakable grief for the community and beyond.
New Ross Educate Together National School confirmed that Malikika had been one of its pupils. Principal Therese White released a statement saying the school had activated its critical incident management plan and was receiving support from the National Educational Psychological Service.
“This is a terrible tragedy for the family, our school, and our community,” said Principal White.
We are deeply saddened by these events. Our deepest sympathy and thoughts are with the family and friends. útbol>
“Our teachers are helping students to deal with this tragic event. We will be sharing information with parents today around how they can support their children at this difficult time. We would ask you to respect our privacy at this difficult time.
”
As authorities launched a murder investigation, the scene on William Street remained cordoned off throughout the day as forensic investigators meticulously combed the scene for evidence.
Local Independent councillor John Dwyer echoed the devastation felt across the community, stating that the events have left the town numb.
“Word started to filter through. I got a call very early yesterday morning from my daughter, who’s a mother herself, asking me had I heard and was aware of the circumstances. And from that point forward, the phone never stopped ringing until I got a very distressing phone call from a young woman who was closely related to the child. And I will never forget that phone call,” Cllr Dwyer said.
“That person was desperately, desperately upset. It was one of the most horrific phone calls I’ve ever had in my life.
“It took time to make sense of that phone call. But when I did, the realisation hit me that many, many people in New Ross will have known this child and would have known the mother, who is from the locality.
You know, there are no words that could adequately describe how people are feeling.
“There’s a real sense of shock. Yes we are left numb at the news. New Ross is a relatively small place. Things like this don’t happen in towns like ours. But unfortunately yesterday the nightmare began for us and for that
poor family. ”
Cllr Dwyer expressed his hope that residents could find ways to support one another through this difficult time, and welcomed the measures put in place at the school to support the children and staff.

“
I can’t imagine how those young children must be feeling and how their parents are attempting to deal with having to explain the horrific circumstances of how that poor child died,” Cllr Dwyer added.
