A tragedy has occurred in Georgia following two children plunged into icy waters following falling into a frozen lake; Unfortunately, one of the children died as a result of the low temperatures, while the other suffered some injuries.

First responders were reportedly called to the scene when two children fell through the ice following bouts of winter weather brought unusually cold conditions.

Rescuers recovered the two children from the lake involved in the tragic water emergency. However, one of the children passed away following arriving at the hospital. The other child is reportedly in stable condition.

Residents reported that several children were playing near the frozen lake in Georgia before the tragedy happened

As reported by Fox Atlantaseveral Georgia town residents reported half a dozen children playing along the shoreline of Lake Ellison near the Lakeside Vista apartments.

Residents who witnessed the events say several of the children were trying to walk on the ice. This, however, is when the frozen shell gave way and led to tragedy.

Witnesses say that one of the children was only a few meters from the mainland, initially. The second boy was standing regarding 10 feet above the water.

“It seemed quite resistant at first,” the witness explained to the outlet. “So I didn’t think much of it.”

The witness also notes that the pond didn’t appear to be too deep in that area to begin with. Tragedy would soon follow, however, as witnesses soon began to hear the screams following two children slipped into the icy waters below the ice.

The 911 call reported that the two children were seen trapped in the ice, with one of them still “clinging to the other.” The local police department responded to the calls, said Georgia Cobb County Fire Department spokesman Nick Danz. Rescuers were able to pull one of the children out of the dangerously cold waters.

The second child was trapped deeper in the icy waters and bystanders were desperately trying to help. They tossed in hoses and even a pool float and other flotation devices in hopes of getting the boy to safety.

First responders deployed the inflatable boats. The Georgia State Patrol helicopter worked in conjunction with a drone unit deploying thermal imaging to help locate the boy.

Rescuers finally pulled the second child from the lake and resuscitation efforts were underway when they were rushed to an area hospital. However, despite the efforts, the boy did not survive.
