The Civil Protection Department in Malta said on Saturday that its rescue team found hundreds of bodies yesterday on the beach of the flood-stricken Libyan city of Derna.
Natalino Bezzina, who leads the Maltese team, told the newspaper:Times of Malta“There were probably regarding 400 (bodies), but it is difficult to determine.”
Malta deployed a team of 72 rescuers from the army and the Civil Protection Department on Wednesday.
A team of four people discovered the bodies, following first finding seven bodies, including the bodies of three children, inside a cave next to the sea.
It is believed that massive floods swept the bodies of the victims into the sea following heavy rains resulting from Storm Daniel caused two dams to collapse, sweeping away a quarter of the coastal city.
Bezzina told Maltese media that a small team from the Civil Protection Department came across the cave, which was half submerged in water, and found the bodies inside.
As the team continued their search, they were joined by Libyan boats also searching for victims and survivors. The team then came across a small bay filled with debris and several hundred bodies.
The Libyan authorities announced that more than 11,000 people were killed as a result of the floods, in addition to the loss of regarding 10,000 people.
