Mumbai ∙ Mass death at Shankarrao Chavan Government Hospital in Nanded, Maharashtra. 24 people including 12 newborn babies died here in a single day. Those who succumbed to snakebite include those who succumbed to death. The opposition parties, Congress and NCP, protested once morest the incident. The opposition blamed the government led by Eknath Shinde for the deaths.
The dean of the hospital responded that the cause of the tragedy was lack of sufficient medicine and staff. The hospital authorities also stated that many employees have been transferred. Officials also responded that on some days, the existing staff are too busy to handle. Terming the incident as unfortunate, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde clarified that a detailed investigation will be conducted and action will be taken.
Former Chief Minister and Congress leader Ashok Chavan demanded that the government take immediate action to bring the situation under control. 70 people are still in danger. There is a huge shortage of staff and medical supplies. Many nurses have been transferred but not replaced. Many devices are not working. Chavan demanded that the government should take action as soon as possible as 1200 people have been admitted in the hospital which might admit 500 patients.
In August, there was a similar incident at Chhatrapati Shivaji Hospital in Kalwa, Thane. 18 people died there in 24 hours. Those suffering from diseases such as ulcers, pneumonia and poisoning died that day. Many were later shifted to nearby hospitals.
