Yesterday evening, a tragedy occurred at the Christmas market in Oudenaarde, in East Flanders. Indeed, the Christmas tree which stood on the square wavered because of the strong gusts of wind and ended up falling. However, a lady was underneath and died under the weight of the tree.
However, it turns out that this tree was already raising questions when it was put up at the end of November. Many people were teased when they noticed that the tree was crooked. Some even compared it to the Tower of Pisa in Italy, known for its leaning position.
The town’s festival alderman explained at the time in the columns of our colleagues at Sudinfo: “In reality, this is not the tree we asked for. It was a two-trunked tree, although we had ordered a single-trunked one. But as we had promised the traders in Oudernarde that the tree would already be installed as part of an event, we no longer had time to change.”
Difficulties that the City was already experiencing in previous years, obviously. “Generally, our tree receives nothing but praise for its absolutely beautiful decorations, but this time it was crooked. It seems like our Christmas tree is cursed, because it happens almost every year.” explained the alderman at the time.
The tragic conclusion of the fall of the Oudenaarde Christmas tree therefore brings out these loaded words…
