“Tragedy at Cuscatlán Stadium: 12 Dead and Dozens Injured in Soccer Match Stampede”

The National Civil Police reported on social networks that several people were injured during a soccer match at the Cuscatlán Stadium.

At least twelve people died this Saturday (05.20.2023) in a stampede of fans who went to the Cuscatlan Stadium of San Salvador to see a match of the local tournament of soccer between sets alliance and Futbolistas Asociados Santanecos (FAS), reported the National Civil Police (PNC).

“Preliminarily we have a negative result of twelve victims, nine who are here in the stadium and three more that we have been informed are in different hospital centers” The Saviordeclared the director of the PNC, Mauricio Arriaza, to the press.

For his part, President Nayib Bukele wrote in Twitter that “the PNC and the Prosecutor’s Office will carry out an exhaustive investigation of the events that occurred in the Cuscatlan Stadium“.


According to the security body, “the first reports point to a stampede of fans who tried to get in to watch the game between alliance y FAS”.

The Minister of the Interior, Juan Carlos Bidegaín, said that “first response” institutions of the national Civil Protection system are attending to people affected by the incidents that occurred. The match was suspended while relief workers evacuated people.

For his part, the Minister of Health, Francisco Alabí, assured that the hospital network “is providing medical care to all patients.”

Hundreds of police officers and military personnel showed up at the stadium. The atmosphere was one of confusion in the surroundings of the place where the intense howl of ambulance sirens predominated.


The spokesman for the relief group Rescue Commands, Carlos Fuentes, explained that -of the first nine people who died- seven are men and two are women. Regarding the injured, he maintained that “preliminarily more than 500 attentions are handled” that were concentrated in the “popular sun” sector of the stadium, with capacity for some 35,000 people, located in the southwestern sector of San Salvador.

The 100 people in the most serious condition were transferred to national hospitals and the Salvadoran Social Security Institute, some showed signs of suffocation and others “different types of trauma,” he added. Regarding how the incident began, Fuentes stated that “apparently one of the gates of the sun sector fell and that caused the people to crowd.”

In a statement, the Salvadoran Federation (FESFUT) said it “deeply regrets” the events that occurred in the Cuscatlan Stadium. Likewise, the entity “stands in solidarity” with the families of the people “affected and deceased” in the incident.
