Tragedy at an amusement park in Halkidiki: “The machines were not licensed”, says the mayor Kassandra

A 19-year-old died tragically in an amusement park, in Pefkohori, Halkidiki, while he was having fun with his family. The toy he was in broke, fatally injuring him.

The mayor of Kassandra, Anastasia Chalkia, spoke to Radio Thessaloniki and said that the amusement park was in a private area and this year it had not made a notification, that is, the procedure followed for the renewal of the license.

As Mrs. Chalkia said, the municipality was already – before the tragedy – in the process of submitting sanctions. “The machines should have had a permit. This is not done by the municipality, as the Ministry of Development says the Ministry of Development says,” he said. “The issue is that they come and set up machines… why weren’t they licensed?”, he pointed out. For the other two amusement parks in the area he said they have made the announcement.

“The Ministry of Development checks the certifications. This is where the machines get permits. How is the municipality to know if the machine is good or not, if it has the necessary specifications? They get ISO, Haccp certifications, there are some procedures. The municipality simply sees if the notification has been uploaded. This particular notification has not been uploaded, so we were in the process of monetary sanctions. It’s a 22-year municipal ordinance, which says exactly what responsibilities each municipality has,” he said characteristically. As soon as the fines come in, Mrs. Chalkia added, then the businessman will be summoned for an explanation and the premises will be sealed.

“The point is that these must be certified. What mechanism should the municipality have to check if these machines were certified? The Ministry of Development is checking whether the specifications of the MFA are met,” he repeated.

In this particular municipality, Mrs. Chalkia noted, three consecutive incidents have occurred in the last few days, with the little girl who died in a camping pool, the fight at the beach shop and now the death of the 19-year-old. Especially referring to the case of the accident with the drowning of the 8-year-old girl in the camp facilities, she noted that the municipality has less staff than required for the establishment of a control mechanism.

“Let’s go to the camps in a bit. The municipality, the permission it gave for the swimming pools was of a declaratory nature. So he sent the sanitation department and says, give him permission. And the Sanitation department itself sent paper, it says, get his permission. The Municipality does not have an audit mechanism. In theory it could. If I had 300 employees, it could. With 100?” Mrs. Chalkia pointed out.

“It is a process so complex and labyrinthine that everyone gets lost. It’s a polynomial that if you ask me for my personal opinion, I radically disagree, but I don’t see that personal opinion counts either. The Municipality, even though we have very few staff, we saw that it has not made a notification to notifybusiness and we were in the process of sanctions before the accident happened”, he stressed.

Concluding, Mrs. Halkia emphasized: “I will speak not as a mayor, but as a mother. She closed a house, lost her child today a tragic family I want to feel sorry for them from the bottom of my heart. They lost their child. This is the evil. That we should be in prevention and not repression”.

How the tragedy at the amusement park happened

The young man from Veria, who was visiting Halkidiki with his family, visited the amusement park on Monday night to have fun and was seriously injured when he broke the spinning chair toy he was on.

An EKAV ambulance was immediately notified, which transported the 19-year-old to the Kassandra Health Center, where the doctors found that it was already too late and the 19-year-old had passed out.

The 58-year-old owner of the amusement park was arrested by the police, while a preliminary investigation is being conducted by the AT of Kassandreas and an expert opinion will be carried out to ascertain the exact causes of the accident.
