This year, the government will receive considerably less money from speeding fines than expected. Partly due to the failure of and maintenance of speed cameras and section controls, the cabinet expects a setback of 149.7 million euros this year. That is why fines will be increased by 10 percent in 2024.
The proceeds from fines will decline further in the coming years, the government fears in the Spring Memorandum. An annual deficit of 190 million to 250 million euros is also expected following 2023.
That is why the fines will increase in 2024. At the beginning of this year, fines already increased by 8.6 percent to compensate for inflation.
It was previously decided not to replace all section controls. Now the cabinet has decided to do so anyway through an extra investment. And that in turn generates more fine income.
