Disposal of plastic in Spain leads to illegal exports to Malaysia and Cambodia

Between 2018 and 2020, traffickers would have earned some 15 million euros by exporting from the port of Valencia no less than 16,000 tonnes of contaminated plastic waste to Asian ports. According to the investigation revealed by the Spanish Civil Guard, which arrested 27 people at the end of December, the illegal organization had specialized in the recovery of used plastics from intensive greenhouse operations in Andalusia and the Levant. .
At the head of the network, five Chinese nationals who were responsible for buying plastic sheeting from farmers at a good price to then send them to Malaysia, but also Cambodia and Thailand. “The members of the network did not complicate their lives. The plastic covered with toxic phytosanitary products was crushed, rinsed with a jet of water and packaged ”, assures the lieutenant in charge of the investigation.
