Traffic Chaos in Erpent College and N4: Citizen Mobilization for Change

The situation is still very complicated for motorists around Erpent college and on the N4 south of Namur. In anticipation of the future P + R deterrent parking and in order to secure the circulation of cyclists, the national road has been made one lane. At the same time, a loop has been set up since the start of the school year in neighborhoods close to the school. Notre-Dame de la Paix College is accessible via rue de Velaine, which is one-way and to exit, motorists go through rue de Géronsart and rue Simone Veil where the light turns red very quickly, preventing smooth traffic. Aurélie Van Herck is a local resident. She decided to distribute leaflets to raise awareness among motorists: “The light turns red following 8 seconds. Barely three cars can pass! It took my companion an hour to return from Namur via the N4: it’s simply untenable! “

One-way routes are the responsibility of the City. On the other hand, the developments on the N4 depend on the Region. Philippe Henry, the Minister in charge of Mobility, defends this single lane. For the latter “This is a change for mobility in Namur and we must accept this choice, while remaining attentive to the difficulties that may arise during the transition!”

Philippe Henry reminds that adaptations are however planned: better synchronization of lights, redirection of motorists towards exit 15 Namur-sud, accessibility to the bus lane for motorists going down towards Namur while waiting for the P + R (scheduled for 2026) . In the other direction, however, the one-band bet will be maintained, which made Maxime Prévot react. The mayor of Namur believes that while waiting for dissuasive parking, motorists are subject to the constraints of these developments without seeing the advantages. Minister Henry responds that this lane is also very useful for cyclists and that all decisions were taken in consultation with the City.

In the meantime, citizen mobilization does not weaken. Urne petition has already collected 2000 signatures.
