Traffic accidents in Cuba continue to leave unfortunate balances in families that suffer the loss of a loved one. In the first four months of 2023 alone, more than 200 people have died from this cause.The negative data was released by the Specialized Transit Organ of the Police in Cuba through the analyst and first lieutenant Ayled Borges. “During the first four months of 2023, around 1,500 accidents were registered in Cuba, with more than 200 deaths and approximately 4,000 injured.”
The expert also indicated that one in five people involved in traffic accidents has died so far this year. The figure is very alarming, however, it means a decrease in the number of deaths if we take into account the same period last year.
Main causes of accidents
The analyst herself confirmed that there are multiple causes that cause a traffic accident in Cuba. Among the most recurrent are the violation of the right of way, not paying due attention, speeding and technical damage to vehicles.
It is highlighted that 94% of traffic accidents are caused by the human factor. Meanwhile, in 35% of events of this type, reported since January 1, 2023, mopeds are the protagonists.
2022 ended with 9,848 traffic accidents in Cuba, a number that was a record compared to previous years. During the 12 months, 700 people died from this cause, almost two per day, 68 were minors. The total number of injuries rose to 7,547 people.
Finally, the Specialized Traffic Authority revealed that almost 1,500 more accidents occurred than in 2021. During that year, 8,369 occurred, which left a negative balance of 589 people dead.
