Tuesday around 10 a.m., a traffic accident occurred on the Grand-Place in Nivelles, near the roundregarding at the bottom of rue de Mons. A driver, slightly injured, was taken to hospital. For some reason to be determined, she lost control of her vehicle, a small Nissan, as she approached the roundregarding heading towards Rue de Mons.
The vehicle climbed onto the curb before the bend, and struck several posts placed to protect pedestrians traveling on the sidewalk. The car grazed the terrace of the Brewery Jean de Nivelleswhere fortunately there was no consumer seated at that time, before finishing his race once morest one of the large wooden flowerpots placed by the City.
The impact was strong enough to set off the car’s airbags, and the flowerpot was knocked onto the sidewalk. “No pedestrians were hit.rejoiced the mayor, Pierre Huart, who went there. Some wonder why we are placing bollards to separate the sidewalks from the road: I believe they proved their usefulness this morning…”
The damaged car was no longer roadworthy and had to be removed by a tow truck. A team from the Nivelles-Genappe police zone took charge of the findings, and the City services then cleaned the place and evacuated the broken posts and the debris from the damaged flowerpot.
