Trade unions GPA/vida on care and support: expanding skills and starting training earlier are wrong measures

Care reform must finally come!

Vienna (OTS) – The trade unions GPA and vida reject an expansion of competence in the home help sector, as favored by the federal states. “Simply asking for more skills will only lead to excessive demands and a loss of quality. Any expansion of the area of responsibility in nursing and care requires a corresponding training. In addition, more responsibility must also lead to better pay,” say Christoph Zeiselberger from GPA and Michaela Guglberger from vida. ++++

Guglberger is convinced: “Lowering the entry age does not lead to any improvement, but, like nursing teaching, is a step in the wrong direction. Dealing with suffering and death is not reasonable for 15-year-olds and according to EU regulations, no activities at the bedside are permitted.

Zeiselberger adds: “The increase in age for training and the expansion of activities are not the miracle cure for solving the shortage of staff in care and support. What is needed is quality and enough time for theory and practice.”

What is finally needed is a holistic care reform that financially enhances the professions in the care and support sector and finally finances the entire area. The care is over and the patients feel that every day,” said Zeiselberger and Guglberger in unison.
