Trade Mission Boosts Tourism Opportunities in Costa del Sol for American and Canadian Markets

A hundred professionals from the tourism sector from the United States and Canada have participated in the conferences held during the trade mission organized by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports, Tourism and Planning Costa del Sol and the Chamber of Commerce of Málaga. Margarita del Cid, acting CEO of Turismo Costa del Sol, highlighted the strategic value of the American and Canadian markets due to their ability to adjust for seasonality, as well as the high level of spending by these tourists, above average.

As Del Cid has underlined, with this type of initiative, it is easier to strengthen commercial ties and position a destination such as the province of Mlaga, which offers a high level of services, accommodation, with a wide range of cultural and gastronomy, both inland and on the coast, which can be enjoyed throughout the year thanks to an exceptional climate, and now, with the possibility of arriving by direct flight from the United States.

In fact, the commercial mission that has been carried out in these three cities in the United States and Canada has been carried out a week following the flight between Malaga and New York began, thus restarting the direct connection between both cities and multiplying the possibilities of connectivity between the United States and the province of Malaga.

According to the latest Tourism Situation Bulletin, the United States is the main source market (non-European) in number of travelers staying in hotels and apartments on the Costa del Sol, with an increase of 10% compared to the same month of 2019 and 75% compared to the same month of 2019. to April 2022.

In the first four months of the year, almost 50,000 Americans have stayed in hotels and apartments in the province of Malaga, which represents an increase of 20% compared to the same period before the health crisis. In general terms, Andalusia is the third community that receives American travelers, following Catalonia and Madrid. During 2022, these tourists spent an average of 9.2 days in the region, and their average spending was 217 euros.

Between January and April of this year, 171,623 American travelers stayed in Andalusian hotels, 70% more than in the same period last year and 11.4% more than in the same months of 2019, the year prior to the pandemic. Overnight stays stood at 396,185, with increases of 65% compared to 2022 and 15.5% compared to 2019.

Andalusia is thus positioned as the third destination in Spain for these travelers, while the United States ranks so far in 2023 as the fifth international issuer for the community (following the United Kingdom, Germany, France and the Netherlands) and first non-European.
