Traces of Greek and Latin writing in exhibits of the Archaeological Museum of Patras

The Ephorate of Antiquities of Achaia participates in the European Days of Cultural Heritage 2024, with an educational activity, entitled: “Traces of Greek and Latin writing in exhibits of the Archaeological Museum of Patras”. The action is aimed at families with children from 4th grade and above and will take place on Sunday, October 13, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This action includes the following stages:

1) Presentation of exhibits of the Archaeological Museum of Patras that contain Greek or Latin inscriptions (tombstones, lamps, mosaics). The topic covers aspects of both our tangible cultural heritage (tombstone inscriptions, lamps, bone objects, etc.) and the intangible (use of ancient Greek and Latin languages) that echo the fact that two cultures (Greek and Roman) have in different ways connected over time and these ties are reflected in shared values, practices and achievements, many of which survive to this day.

2) During the action, the participants will have the opportunity to touch five copies of archaeological objects with scratches, which come from the museum collection of the project “Th-ink: graffiti as historical testimony and as damage to ancient monuments” of the Ephorate of Antiquities of the City of Athens, which was implemented within the framework of the E.P. “Development of Human Resources Education and Lifelong Learning NSRF 2014-2020”, with the co-financing of Greece and the European Union (EKT). In this context, reference will be made to graffiti as a historical testimony.

3) Screening of a short film (duration 20 minutes), created in the context of the project “Th-ink: graffiti as historical evidence and as damage to ancient monuments” of the Ephorate of Antiquities of the City of Athens, which was implemented in the context of E .P. “Development of Human Resources Education and Lifelong Learning NSRF 2014-2020”, with the co-financing of Greece and the European Union (EKT). Movie title: a) “Ancient graffiti: Is there such a thing”? or b) “Think before you ink!”. The film chosen to be shown depends on the age group of the participants.

4) Writing and painting workshop during which students will be given a photocopy of their name in Mycenaean and Archaic script and asked to copy and paint it.
