TPS modification affects these citizens

Asia and the Caribbean qualify to join the Temporary Protected Status (TPS), with Yemen and Haiti being the beneficiary countries on this occasion.

The extension and redesignation of Yemen will apply for 18 months, from September 4, 2024, to March 3, 2026.

As far as Haiti is concerned, it is important to clarify that the extension will be feasible until August 3, 2025.

TPS para Yemen

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas confirmed the extension of the TPS in Yemen earlier this week.

Mayorkas said the change was made following assessing the chaotic conditions in the Asian country.

According to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the proposal allows 2,300 Yemeni beneficiaries to retain their TPS.

Mayorkas also said Yemen has been in a precarious situation for a decade.

Given the state of conflict, civilians have had difficulty meeting their basic needs, including water, food and access to healthcare.

“The actions taken today by the Department of Homeland Security will allow certain Yemenis currently residing in the United States to remain and work here until conditions in their home country improve,” he said.

TPS for Haiti

This modification of the TPS is estimated to benefit 309,000 Haitians, so that they can start from scratch during their stay in the American nation, EFE reported.

“Haiti is particularly prone to flooding and landslides and often suffers significant damage from storms, flooding and earthquakes,” Mayorkas said.

He also noted that these “overlapping humanitarian challenges have resulted in urgent and ongoing humanitarian needs.”
