TP-Link Tapo C510W review: an affordable 360 camera that comes into its own after dark

2023-09-30 05:00:00

TP-Link has equipped its motorized outdoor camera with a 3 Mpx sensor which allows it to deliver images of 2304 x 1296 pixels. Lower definitions are also offered to make recordings lighter or easier to access remotely: 1920 x 1080 pixels, 1280 x 720 pixels and 640 x 360 pixels. The lower the definition, the more difficult it will be to zoom in on the images.

The optics do not offer the widest field of vision on the market, but the motorization allows (partly) to compensate since it follows intruders. They still have to enter its field of vision for the first time to be detected. Infrared vision is offered for nighttime and there are also projectors to enjoy color images rather than black & white.

The TP-Link camera delivers images of satisfactory quality. The different elements of our test scene are easily identifiable thanks to sharp outlines, but details are lost in low-contrast areas, such as the embroidery of our light fabric square. It is also difficult to distinguish the strands of hair in our column of portraits on the Tapo image. While it further accentuates the contrast, the Ezviz C8W Pro still does better in this exercise. Generally speaking, it manages to bring out small details more, even if it does not always capture as many, in particular because of more pronounced deformations at the periphery. It should be (a little) easier to identify an intruder on Ezviz camera images.

When they draw out their infrared vision, our two cameras stand out a little more, but this time it is the Tapo C510W which takes the advantage by delivering images with much greater clarity than what its competitor offers. It also avoids certain problems that we observed during the day, in particular the poor management of low contrasts in the bright areas of our test scene. However, the blacks remain a little blocked, more so than in the images from the Ezviz C8W Pro. The latter should thus be able to provide more information on an intruder hidden in bushes, for example, but the TP-Link camera remains far ahead overall.

Let us add that TP-Link offers color night vision using small projectors integrated around the lens, but it is preferable to do without them. The images are less sharp than with infrared vision and therefore ultimately reveal fewer elements, in exchange for colors that are far too undersaturated.

The difference is even more striking in our identification test, because it was possible for us to recognize an individual up to 5 m away with infrared vision, whereas this becomes very difficult beyond 3 m only with infrared vision. night in color. To have a chance of identifying an individual, they must have been detected by the Tapo C510W for it to trigger a recording. The system relies on image analysis and is rather responsive. The camera is in any case capable of detecting movement at the other end of our laboratory and probably even further. The range, however, depends on the settings and using the AI to detect only humans limits it to around 7.50 m with the floodlights on continuously, and just over 6 m with infrared vision or mode clever.

For comparison, the Ezviz C8W Pro allowed us to recognize an individual up to 6 m away in the dark thanks to its powerful projector – still 5 m in infrared vision. Its detection system, however, was a little less sensitive, requiring the use of the projector to detect activity at the end of our lab. Without a searchlight, the range did not exceed 8.5 m, with or without human form recognition.
