Toyota has announced a technological breakthrough that will halve the weight, size and cost of batteries for electric vehicles. This is reported by The Guardian, citing the president of the concern’s research and development center in the field of carbon neutrality, Keiji Kaita.

The Japanese company said that they were able to simplify the production of the material used to make solid-state batteries. The company called this discovery a step forward that might significantly reduce charging time and increase the range of electric vehicles.

“We are looking to make a difference with our liquid and solid state batteries, which are notoriously large, heavy and expensive to manufacture. We’re talking regarding the potential to halve all of these factors.”Kaita commented.

According to him, thanks to the new technology, Toyota will be able to develop a solid-state battery, with which the range of an electric car will be 1.2 thousand km, and it will take less than 10 minutes to charge it. According to the Financial Times, the company expects to be able to mass-produce such solid-state batteries in 2027-2028.

Solid-state batteries, which use a solid material as an electrolyte, are seen as a more reliable, convenient, and safe alternative to liquid-filled lithium-ion batteries. However, solid-state batteries are now more complex and expensive to manufacture. The Japanese company claims it might greatly simplify the manufacturing process for solid-state batteries, potentially making it easier than manufacturing lithium-ion batteries.
