For the fifth consecutive year, Toyota has solidified its position as the world’s leading automaker. The Japanese automotive giant achieved this feat by selling a remarkable 10,821,480 new vehicles globally in 2024, a number that includes sales from its lexus, daihatsu, and Hino brands. Within this total, the Toyota brand alone, encompassing lexus, achieved sales of 10,159,336 vehicles.
toyota’s success is partly attributed to its commitment to environmentally kind vehicles. During 2024, sales of Toyota’s electrification vehicles surged by 23.2 percent. These vehicles encompass a range of technologies, including hybrids, mild hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), and fuel-cell cars (fcevs).
Hybrid vehicles emerged as the most popular choice among Toyota’s electrified offerings, with sales reaching 4,142,412 units. Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) followed with 153,829 units sold, while bevs contributed 139,892 units. Mild-hybrid vehicles accounted for 94,810 sales, and fuel-cell vehicles (FCEVs) saw 1,778 units sold.
In 2024, Toyota’s hybrid vehicles captured a notable 40.8 percent of its global sales volume. however,battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for a relatively smaller share, contributing onyl 1.4 percent to Toyota’s total sales.
While Toyota reigned supreme, its main competitor, Volkswagen Group, faced a slight downturn in sales, registering a 2.3 percent decrease to reach 9 million vehicles sold. This decline was primarily driven by efforts to reduce domestic fees and navigate price wars in the Chinese market.
Toyota also experienced a 3.7 percent decrease in sales during 2024. This dip was largely attributed to a meaningful decline in sales within Japan, a result of governance challenges surrounding vehicle certification procedures, especially at Daihatsu.
Despite these challenges, Toyota maintained its position as the world’s top-selling automaker in 2024, showcasing its enduring market strength and resilience.
