Toyota Launches Hardware Update Program for Cars: Enhancing Safety Features and Extending Lifespan

Toyota has revealed that it has launched a hardware update program for its cars. It starts with the new Prius PHEV and mainly concerns safety equipment.

To ensure that its cars stay in the game longer, Toyota has just launched a brand new program. The Japanese manufacturer will thus provide its cars so that it is easy to add features to them.

We know this with “Over The Air” updates for software, which are very common on electric cars. But for Toyota, this principle must now be found on the material part of the cars.

The manufacturer does not underestimate the challenge that this represents, since each novelty that the model receives during its years of marketing must be able to be installed on previous versions.

It is thus necessary “anticipate the work required for updates during the development phase”writes Toyota. “You have to design systems in advance that can significantly reduce the time required. »

The first phase of the project is to carry out a full-scale trial of this process. To achieve this, Toyota limits it to Japan and the new Prius. This workshop opened on January 1, 2022, in view of the arrival of the new Prius plug-in hybrid.

Toyota’s goal is to make its customers keep their cars longer. “So they can keep driving their beloved car for years to come.” »

Two financial options to benefit from it

Before discussing Toyota’s pricing policy on this project, remember that it is not accessible in Europe. For the moment, only Japan benefits from it, and Toyota will democratize it later if successful.

Currently, this is for the Advanced Park package, which offers several security options. It includes the right angle detector, a 360 camera, rear pedestrian detection, and remote control.

So it’s part of Toyota’s Kinto Unlimited program, which aims to extend the life of cars. More generally, this represents a change in policy within the group. But this environmentally laudable solution comes at a price for customers.

To update the hardware of their car, owners will have two solutions. The first will be to pay for the option and its installation. The second will be via a monthly subscription, the price of which we do not yet know.
