Letters containing a suspicious substance were already received in three official buildings in the Belgian capital Brussels on Thursday. They contained brucine, the public prosecutor’s office in Brussels said on Friday, according to Belgian media. Nobody was injured. This toxic substance in the form of a white crystalline powder is only dangerous if swallowed by a person. Contact with skin poses no danger.
The envelopes containing this substance were found in the State Security building, in the office of Justice Minister Paul Van Tigchelt and in the Palace of Justice. “After the letters with the powder were found in various locations, the police were notified,” said prosecutor’s spokeswoman Yasmina Vanoverschelde. “All people who came into contact with the powder were isolated and examined. No one was injured. The fire department was also on site each time to make initial assessments and set up a security perimeter.”
The Brussels public prosecutor’s office ordered an analysis of the powder, which revealed that it was brucine. She also launched an investigation to determine who sent the letters and their motive. The initial results showed that “these acts have nothing to do with the shootings of the last few days in Brussels,” emphasized the spokeswoman.
