Towards the end of petrol cards for non-professional journeys? Experts give their recommendations to the government

Last May, the government requested a group of seven economists to find ways to support the purchasing power of Belgian residents. This Monday, the experts deliver their final report. They recommend ending the fuel card system, especially for non-professional journeys. These proposals will be presented this evening, in kern dedicated to purchasing power.

RTBF was able to read the final report, produced under the leadership of Pierre Wunsch, the president of the National Bank of Belgium. On the menu: the end of the petrol card system, especially for non-professional journeys.

Indeed, for the group of seven economists, the current crisis creates an opportunity to “limit the very significant distortion created by company cars.

We make this proposal for both distribution and energy efficiency reasons. Finally, it would be good for public finances

They therefore wish to tackle the third component of these subsidies: non-professional mobility – judged “less defensible“.

They therefore proposeto limit, or even to abolish these “petrol cards” for non-professional travel. We make this proposal for both distribution and energy efficiency reasons. Finally, it would be good for public finances.”

Other measures

Today’s meeting is part of a series of restricted councils of ministers where the government is trying to agree on various major issues before July 21, the national holiday. On the table: pensions, purchasing power, energy etc.

Like what had been organized during the health crisis, the government has appointed this group of seven economists to advise it in the social and economic crisis we are going through.
