We are heading towards the gradual end of oil-fired boilers in Wallonia. The regional government has updated its Air Climate Energy Plan. This contains all the measures that should enable Wallonia to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030, compared to 1990.
This involves abandoning fossil fuels, particularly in heating systems.
End of oil and coal
Consequence: in Wallonia, boilers, oil tanks or coal stoves are condemned in the more or less medium term. In new buildings, the installation of these heating systems will be prohibited from the end of 2024. And in existing buildings, when replacing an old installation, fuel oil and coal will also be prohibited. The date remains to be defined, it will be between 2025 and 2027.
“Already today, if you want to change the system, it is cheaper to opt for another heating system, for example by a biomass or heat pump system, explains Philippe Henry, Walloon Minister for Energy. We will continue to increase premiums and support so that no one finds themselves in difficulty to install ‘sustainable’ heating instead of ‘fossil’ heating.”
Paradox: gas, also a fossil fuel, remains authorized for the time being.
Among many others, this ban on oil heating should allow Wallonia to reach the European objective of carbon neutrality in 2050.
It should be noted that in Flanders, the installation of oil-fired boilers has already been prohibited since January 1, 2022, except in the event of a lack of gas connection in the street.
