Towards Net Zero Emissions, Renewable Energy is a Must

Chairman of Commission VII of the Indonesian House of Representatives from the NasDem Faction, Sugeng Suparwoto (MI)

Chairman of Commission VII of the Indonesian House of Representatives from the NasDem Faction, Sugeng Suparwoto, said that the development of new renewable energy (EBT) is no longer just an option for Indonesia. In the target towards net zero emissions, EBT is a must, aka a non-negotiable price, so that various acceleration efforts must be carried out.

“We have no choice but to enter new renewable energy. New renewable energy is not an option, once again it is a necessity,” he said in Symposium Energy Insecurity and its Handling Strategy which was held at the NasDem Tower Ballroom, Tuesday (20/8).

To become a developed country, of course the development of renewable energy is one of the important elements. Because, the energy that is currently used is very limited and not environmentally friendly. The commitment to net zero emissions needs to be continuously strengthened in various government policies.

Sugeng said that as a large country, Indonesia is blessed with extraordinary large EBT resources. Located on the equator, the energy source from the sun can be converted into an electricity scale of approximately 3,000 GW. Likewise with geothermal because of its geographical location at the level of fire.

“We are in ring of fire “But on the other hand, it has great geothermal potential. We have water, for example in Membramo Papua, there is a potential of 30 GW, in Kahayan, approximately 9 GW, later in IKN it will be taken from Kahayan,” he explained.

“This is the great potential of new renewable energy that inevitably has to be included because once again net zero emissions. On the other hand, we need a large amount of energy but it must be clean energy that is sustainable,” continued Sugeng.

In addition, he continued, there is nuclear energy that needs to be developed. Because, it is almost impossible to achieve net zero emissions without nuclear. However, there are still many problems that must be resolved before truly developing the cleanest energy, such as uranium which is a source of nuclear energy.

“Nuclear is no longer the last choice but has become an option like other energy. So the government has accelerated the process of forming a nuclear institution,” he added.

Furthermore, Sugeng said that Indonesia is currently not affected by the energy trilemma. This is because energy such as oil is still largely imported. The dependence on oil imports also affects the Indonesian economy.

“Our oil lifting is 600 thousand barrels/day, our oil consumption is 1.4 million barrels/day so that we import approximately 800 thousand barrels a day. Safely depending on imports, it is not yet sustainable in terms of the energy trilemma,” he said.

He added that NasDem DPP Chairman Surya Paloh is very concerned about energy issues because they concern the livelihoods of many people. So that various efforts to accelerate EBT are always supported by NasDem. (Z-11)
