The hospital crisis, present in everyone’s mind, should not make us forget the initiatives carried out by the teams in the field. Because a stay in hospital can aggravate the loss of autonomy and increase the problems of a person living with Alzheimer’s disease, initiatives are being developed to make the hospital “Alzheimer Friendly”, with actions promoting welcoming and caring for people living with Alzheimer’s disease.
The demographic transition leads to the increasingly frequent reception of elderly people, in particular the most fragile among them living with cognitive disorders.
To give teams the means to go further in this process, the Médéric Alzheimer Foundation, in partnership with the French Hospital Federation (FHF) and FEHAP, is launching the call for projects “Towards an Alzheimer Friendly Hospital”, with an endowment of 50,000 euros.
Applicants will have until August 15, 2023, to submit an application. All the information will be online on the websites of the FHF, the FEHAP and the Médéric Alzheimer Foundation. The winners will be announced on September 21, 2023, on the occasion of World Alzheimer’s Day.
The initiatives must be carried out by a health structure and fall within the five areas of action identified in the guide “References 3. Improving the reception of elderly people with cognitive disorders in emergencies”:
- Identifying older people with cognitive impairment
2. Recognize the role and place of caregivers
3. Train and raise awareness regarding geriatric culture and Alzheimer’s disease
4. Adapt the space
5. Aim for a global approach
This call for projects is open to any health structure welcoming people living with Alzheimer’s disease:
- Emergency services and hospitalization (cardiology, neurology, orthopaedics, etc.)
- Day hospitals in short-stay establishments (Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics)
- Administrative services
- Aftercare and rehabilitation services
- Mental health facilities
- Outpatient Services
A watchword: inventiveness
For 10 years, the Foundation has put forward initiatives that are part of an Alzheimer Friendly hospital:
- The hospiSenior room (GCS HUGO): a prototype room adapted to aging, in order to improve the quality of geriatric care by modernizing hospital rooms.
- A system of ” fast track » : the emergency department of the Ambroise Paré hospital (Boulogne) has set up a decision-making algorithm which allows the earliest possible admission to the short-term hospitalization unit of elderly people coming from the emergency room, in order to limit the waiting time.
- Socio-aesthetic care for people living with Alzheimer’s disease in an SSR in Zuydcoote (59).
- In order to improve patient support and care, the Center Hospitalier
Intermunicipal Caux Vallée de Seine (76) has implemented a global project within its emergency, imaging and outpatient medicine-surgery departments. The actions are organized according to several axes: training, the development of premises and spaces and the implementation of non-drug approaches.
This call for projects can finance, among other things: training, man-time, the purchase of equipment, communication tools, evaluation actions… Innovative projects will be given priority, but projects aimed at spin off existing initiatives will also be able to apply
