Towards a postponement of the CAN? According to information from Sport News Africa, the hypothesis would take shape. Supposed to start on June 23, 2023, CAF representatives have reportedly started discussions to postpone the event. A meeting would have taken place in Doha on the sidelines of the World Cup draw, “meeting at the initiative of nations qualified for the 2022 World Cup, who have expressly requested the postponement of the playoffs“.
Indeed, some matches of these qualifiers are scheduled in June and September (4 in June, 2 in September). However, the nations qualified for the World Cup would like to take advantage of these international beaches to prepare for the Qatari meeting. Worse, Tunisia would have threatened to boycott CAN 2023 if CAF did not change its schedule.
Three solutions would thus be examined: keep things as they are, a postponement of the CAN in January 2024 (but this would lead to a new showdown with European clubs), or else “a mixed solution with a closing of the playoffs in March 2023, which would leave the competition for the month of June 2023“. It remains to be seen what will ultimately be decided.
