Towards a possible return to military service in Belgium? “These are food for thought”

In the program “It’s not every day Sunday” of this Sunday, November 27, the chief of defense, Admiral Michel Hofman, was the guest of Christophe Deborsu. The opportunity for the Admiral to speak regarding a possible return to military service following the conflict in Ukraine and for the future.

Will we see the return of military service or of community service? The Chief of Defense, Michel Hofman, is clear on the subject: “Today, there is no question of introducing a compulsory service“. “The file is not current. We are not ready, we do not have the budgets, nor the infrastructures and the personnel“.

For him, two perspectives exist:that of recruitment since we must increase and open all avenues to be able to recruit young people. The other is that of the constitution of a reserve which is also one of the objectives of military service.“. An alarming finding that highlights the deficits the army has to face.

An uncertain conflict

Then came the question regarding the war in Ukraine. A conflict that has been bogged down for a while, the situation in Europe is plunged into uncertainty which is pushing our defense to remain on guard.

We do not know in which direction the conflict will go“explains Michel Hofman. Nevertheless, he wants to be reassuring for the moment: There is no factor that would lead us to increase our defense measures“. With a Europe united and ready to support its allies, the future can be more reassuring.
