Our economy was able to benefit significantly from the growing number of tourists last year. Foreign and Dutch holidaymakers together spent 96 billion euros in our country, regarding 60 percent more than in corona year 2021.
Of that amount, regarding a third (34.5 billion euros) came from foreign tourists. Two thirds therefore came from the Dutch themselves. This is evident from figures from Statistics Netherlands and the Ministry of Economic Affairs.
The increase is largely due to foreign tourists. They stayed away in large numbers in 2021 because of the lockdowns. Last year there were hardly any corona measures, making the Netherlands a popular destination once more for tourists from Europe and other parts of the world.
Due to the increase, tourist expenditure in our country has returned to the level of 2019, the last year before the corona crisis. In fact, spending is even slightly higher. This is mainly because the Dutch now spend more money in their own country than four years ago.
Statistics Netherlands does report that the figures have not been corrected for price changes. In other words, inflation is likely to play an important role in the increase.
