Tourism economy grows 5.5% in Mexico

MEXICO CITY (EFE).— Mexico’s economy related to tourism grew 5.5% year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2023, a growth of almost twice the advance of the national gross domestic product (GDP), reported the Secretary of Tourism (Sectur ), Miguel Torruco.

This was announced yesterday in a statement regarding the results of the Quarterly Indicators of Tourism Activity (ITAT), made up of the Tourism Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Domestic Tourism Consumption.

The public official assured that, with this result, Mexico’s tourism GDP maintains a recovery trajectory; since, in its annual comparison, it registered an increase of 5.5% in real terms.

The performance of the economy related to tourism reflects a recovery of 5.8 percentage points compared to the annual variation of the fourth quarter of 2019, prior to the crisis in the tourism sector due to the Covid pandemic.

In this sense, Torruco Marqués highlighted that tourism GDP increased 5.5% in the fourth quarter of 2023, while national GDP expanded by 2.5% compared to the last quarter of 2022.

By components, the official pointed out that goods registered a growth of 2.3% compared to what was registered in the fourth quarter of 2022 and services grew 6.4% in real terms.

Meanwhile, compared to the third quarter of 2023, goods increased 3.8%, while services are 1.1% away from reaching what was recorded in that reference period.

Likewise, Torruco detailed that in the same period the Quarterly Indicator of Domestic Tourist Consumption is only 1.7% of its annual comparison for 2022.

Regarding the third quarter of 2023, Domestic Tourist Consumption, which is equivalent to the sum of Domestic Tourist Consumption and Inbound Tourist Consumption, registered an increase of 0.2% in real terms, the Mexican official concluded.
