Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) won in the sprint, at the end of the first of the 7 stages of the Tour de San Juan. He was the fastest following 144 km around San Juan. Michael Morkov et James Nizzolo complete the podium.
A group of around ten riders spent a large part of the race in the lead. As expected, the sprinters’ teammates forced a general regrouping regarding twenty kilometers from the finish. Most favorites, including Remco Evenepoelavoided a collective crash 8km from the finish.
Evenepoel took the train Soudal Quick Step to the last mile banner, the goal being to launch Fabio Jakobsen. But the reigning European champion failed to position himself to play for victory. It was therefore Sam Bennett who won this first stage, the 60th victory of his career.
This Tuesday, place for the second stage, between Villa San Agustin and Jachal (202 km), which might be more interesting. No ascent listed but a start constantly in gear, for 80 km, should tire the organisms. After a long downhill portion, the peloton will face a slow, very slightly steep, but constant ascent towards the finish. This does not say what, a priori, to scare the sprinters.
