The Tour of Hungary started this Wednesday, and the first winner of this 2023 edition is named Dylan Groenewegen ! Dutch sprinter Team Jayco AlUla beat the Irish Sam Bennett (BORA-hansgrohe) at the photo-finish, while Caleb Ewan (Lotto Dstny) completed the podium and that Fabio Jakobsen (Soudal Quick-Step) only took seventh place. This 1st stage was marked by a big fall in the end, the main victim being Egan Bernal (INEOS Grenadiers). Once once more unlucky, the Colombian took a long time to get up, visibly in shock following this incident. After a few minutes of rest, the former winner of the Tour de France got back on his bike and was able to cross the finish line. His teammate Luke Plapp was also caught in this fall, which will have no repercussions in the general classification since it fell in the last 3 kilometers. Dylan Groenewegen is the first leader of this Tour of Hungary.
The 1st stage in Hungary for Groenewegen, Bernal on the ground
Charles Planet in the breakaway, Bernal involved in a fall, Groenewegen winner
Intended for sprinters, this 1st stage of the Tour of Hungary is first animated by a breakaway made up of five riders. The brave of the day are the Hungarians Balazs Rozsa (Epronex-Hungary Cycling Team) et Zeteny Szijarto (Hungarian team), the French Charles Planet (Team Novo Nordisk), le Belge Ward Vanhoof (Team Flanders-Baloise) and the Slovak Hair Stocek (ATT Investments). The peloton calmly manages the advance of this leading group, the Soudal Quick-Step of Fabio Jakobsenthe Team Jayco AlUla of Dylan Groenewegen and the BEST-hansgrohe of Sam Bennett each having put a runner to ride.
Inevitable, the junction is made quite early since it intervenes more than 25 kilometers from the finish, the peloton having really taken no risk. The continuation and end of the race is calm, all the runners accepting the fact that this 1st stage of the 2023 edition ends in a sprint. A few hundred meters before the big thighs are explained, a big fall throws several runners to the ground, including Egan Bernal (INEOS Grenadiers). Shocked but not seeming too physically affected, the Colombian gets back on his bike following a few minutes of rest. The sprint is extremely tight, Dylan Groenewegen et Sam Bennett crossing the line almost at the same time. At the photo-finish, it’s finally Green roads who is declared the winner of this 1st stage.
