Tour of Flanders: Tadej Pogacar triumphs for the first time in Oudenaarde – Van der Poel is second

Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) finished second. The Dutchman was 16 seconds behind Tadej Pogacar at the finish. This was his fourth consecutive podium finish at the Monument in Flanders.

Behind them, Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo/+1:12)) and Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma/+1:12) sprinted for third place. The Dane had the better end for himself and grabbed the last place on the podium. Places five and six went to Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost/+1:12) and Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ/+1:12).

“It’s fantastic. I will never forget this day,” said Pogacar, who triumphed as only the third Tour winner in Flanders: “I knew I had to try solo – that was the only way. I’m very proud. “

Tour of Flanders: Politics and slide with active racing

A strong race was shown by Nils Politt (Bora-hansgrohe), who drove with the top favorites for a long time and in the meantime broke away from the prominent group of pursuers. In the final, however, he mightn’t keep up with more and fell behind.

The German champion finished the “Ronde” in 20th place. The best German was John Degenkolb (DSM/+6:09) in 19th place.

Jonasutsch (EF Education-EasyPost) was a long-time member of the day’s breakaway, whose line-up kept changing. At times they gained a lead of more than six minutes and grew to 20 riders before the favorites caught up.

Tour of Flanders: Numerous falls overshadow the course of the race

The second monument of the year was overshadowed by a violent mass crash, because the Polish driver Filip Maciejuk (Bahrain Victorious) had caused an uncontrolled driving style around 140 kilometers before the finish line.

When trying to overtake the peloton on the left edge of the lane, Maciejuk came across a wet lawn. As he cut back into the field, he collided with a colleague, which set off a chain reaction. Numerous riders and some top stars like Peter Sagan and Julian Alaphilippe crashed.

A little later Maciejuk was excluded from the race because of too risky driving. The Pole also apologized via Twitter. Sagan had to end his working day early as a result of the fall. Tim Wellens was also unable to continue.

However, it was not to remain the only crash in Flanders. Before and following, there were repeated violent falls on the narrow northern Belgian roads. Around 71 kilometers from the finish, two other prominent drivers, Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) and Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Victorious), were caught.
