Cross-country skier Teresa Stadlober reached tenth place on the second stage of the Tour de Ski. The Salzburg woman was 53.2 seconds behind the victorious Finn Kerttu Niskanen in the classic individual start race over 10 kilometers in Toblach on Sunday and was more than 40 away from the podium places. In the Tour standings with the new overall leader Jessie Diggins, 33rd in the sprint opener improved to 16th place.

“Tenth place is really cool. I’m absolutely happy with the result,” emphasized Stadlober, pointing out her good material. A 20 km skating pursuit follows on New Year’s Day, in which Stadlober starts 1:21 minutes behind Diggins in the tightly packed field of pursuers. “My goal is to get into the top ten overall and achieve a good individual result.”

Over 10 km, Niskanen won 6.7 seconds ahead of Germany’s Victoria Carl and 10.7 seconds ahead of Diggins. The American took the lead in the tour rankings, just ahead of Carl (+7 seconds) and sprint winner Linn Svahn (SWE/+11).

In the men’s category, Norwegian Erik Valnes took the lead jersey with second place. The day’s victory went surprisingly and superiorly to the Finnish Perttu Hyvärinen. Mika Vermeulen, who was weakened by an illness around Christmas, lost almost a minute and a half to Hyvärinen in 32nd place. In the overall ranking, the Styrian is also outside the top 30, over two minutes behind.
