Wout van Aert will not be at the start of the 18th stage of the Tour de France this Thursday morning. The Belgian is traveling straight to Belgium to be with his wife who is regarding to give birth to their second child.
“In consultation with the team, we have concluded that my place is now at home,” the Belgian explained in a video posted by his Jumbo-Visma team, “the doctor said labor was imminent. That’s why we made this decision.”
Winner of the Tour de France in 2010, Andy Schleck is convinced: “Wout van Aert can play for the win on a general classification”
“It’s a strange feeling [de devoir quitter le Tour], but this is not a dilemma. It’s an easy decision to make. I always said I would go home if I was needed. It happened,” explained van Aert, who announced the news on Wednesday evening to his teammates.
If Wout van Aert did not win a stage in this Grande Boucle, Jonas Vingegaard almost assured his final victory on the slopes of the Col de la Loze. The Dane now has a 7’35” lead over his runner-up in the general classification.
