Time trial specialists haven’t gotten their money’s worth at the Tour de France so far – and they should look sparingly in view of the only time trial on this tour: there are only 22.4 kilometers between Passy and Combloux.
The course is also much more suitable for climbers than rogues like Nils Politt or Stefan Küng: At the beginning, the route planners installed the uncategorized Côte de la Cascade Coeur – with a steep ramp – and at the end the 2.5-kilometer long and im Côte de Domancy (2nd category) with an average gradient of 9.4 percent – in some cases the gradient here reaches a maximum of 15 percent.
After the mountain classification, there are still three kilometers to the finish, which have to be mastered with an incline of around five percent. Already in 2016, the ascent was part of a 17-kilometer time trial, which, however, subsequently had significantly more meters in altitude. Back then, Chris Froome won that stage.
Intermediate time measurements are taken following 7.1 and 16.1 kilometers and at the climb to the Côte de Domancy. Due to the relatively short distance, no one-minute gaps among the classification drivers are to be expected, but the ramp at the end of the course can still make a difference. For the favorites there is also the question of whether it makes sense to switch from a time trial bike to a conventional road bike before the climb.
For the first time, the starting and finishing points are stations in the Tour de France, even if the entourage from the 14th to the 17th stage settled almost completely in this region,
