Tour de France 2023: Stage 10 Winner and General Classification Update

2023-07-11 16:54:37

The 10th stage of the Tour de France was won in Issoire by the Basque Pello Bilbao (Bahrain-Victorious), who thus performed an excellent operation in the general classification by moving up to 5th place. Jonas Vingegaard has meanwhile kept his yellow jersey without a hitch.

Initially considered as a transition day promised to adventurers, this stage got off to a flying start. Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) and Tadej Pogacar (UAE-Emirates) indeed got involved in the fight to break away, accompanied by their teammates.

If they finally gave up their desires by noting that they were neutralized, the frantic pace of the 1st hour of racing did damage, with a large group including the French David Gaudu (Groupama-FdJ) and Romain Bardet (DSM -Firmenich) who was quickly left behind. At the cost of a great collective effort from these two teams, everyone was able to rejoin the main peloton when the breakaway finally took shape. The favorites then had a quiet day.

Neilands caught 3km from goal

Among the fugitives of the day, a man could be threatening in the general classification: the Basque Pello Bilbao, 11th before the start. Victory has long seemed promised to Latvian Krists Neilands (Israel-PT), who came out of the breakaway group well. He finally cracked 3km from the line under the impetus of Ben O’Connor (AG2R-Citroën).

Pello Bilbao (33) was the smartest in the last few hundred meters to overtake Georg Zimmermann (Intermarché) in the sprint. The Basque took advantage of his tour de force to move up to 5th place in the general classification at 4’34”.

“This victory is for Gino”

Pello Bilbao dedicated his victory to his late Swiss team-mate Gino Mäder. “This victory is for Gino. I wanted to win for Gino, achieve the biggest goal for him. I wanted to do it from the first week which was also very important for me with the departure from the Basque Country. It hadn’t worked. But I worked to live this moment“, he explained after the race.

The Basque had also announced at the start of the Tour that he would donate one euro to an environmental association for each rider finishing behind him at each stage, following the example of Gino Mäder at the Tour of Spain in 2021.
