From Beaujolais Vert with its Douglas forests, passing through numerous passes, to the wine-growing plain and the region’s wines, the 12th stage of the Tour 2023 shows all the diversity of landscapes of the Geopark Beaujolais… and its wines.
The best, no doubt, is to leave with a guide from the Geopark to discover the history of the earth and its link with fauna, flora, landscape, heritage, wine, water or even humans @istock
The Tour de France crosses today the Geopark Beaujolais from West to East with a departure from Roanne for an arrival in Belleville-en-Beaujolais. IIt is one of the 7 French Geoparks classified in France by Unesco for its remarkable geological heritage.
It tells 500 million years. The best, no doubt, is to go with a guide from the Geopark in order to discover the history of the earth and its link with the fauna, flora, landscape, heritage, wine, water or even humans. Each guide has a history, knowledge and in-depth “Beaujolais Geopark” training.
In addition, while the runners will cover the 169 km between Roanne and Belleville-en-Beaujolais, theCyclists will not fail to combine effort and comfort on the Loops by bike of the Beaujolais crus. On horseback between mountains and vineyards, there will be something for everyone, for the calves or the palate: circuits without great difficulty, in the middle of castles, cellars and appellations. There are even “oeno-electric” walks in the region allowing you to taste local beverages following exercise.
15 km from the finish, the Tour passes at the foot of Mont Brouilly, the emblematic mountain of Beaujolais, which is made of volcanic rock, which looks like a volcano, but is not. In fact, these are volcanic flows set up under an ocean 380 Ma ago.

On 30,000 m2 and 40 themes covered throughout the day the visitor wanders through exhibition halls, with 3000 collectibles of the regional wine heritage, in interactive shows, with an extraordinary overview of the Beaujolais and Mâconnais landscapes, then an immersive experience in the cellar of a winegrower who will tell them regarding the history of the vineyard, thanks to a time machine. The little train will transport visitors for a last technical meeting in a real winemaking center then an olfactory walk and a ride in a rosalie through our aromatic gardens. After sharing with our visitors the secrets behind the scenes of the world of vines and wine, the story of the women and men who made the vineyard and who continue to write it, it’s time for the tasting…
