Victory in Copenhagen made Lampaert the first Belgian to wear the yellow jersey since Greg Van Avermaet in 2018.
“My head is exploding. To be able to finish in the top ten would have been great. I’m just a farm boy from Belgium. Now I’ve beaten everyone, the best in the world. I never expected that,” said Lampaert with tears of joy in the first place winner interview.
“I can’t believe it, I knew I was in good shape, but winning a stage on the Tour on day one wasn’t even a dream of mine. But I did it.”

Kämna best German, favorites close together
As the best German, Lennard Kämna (Bora – hansgrohe) finished 19th, 25 seconds behind.
“All in all, it was a solid time trial,” commented 25-year-old Kämna on the result. “I’m in pretty good shape, but I didn’t feel great today.”
Lampaert claws yellow, defending champion Pogacar in wait
Among the favorites for the overall tour victory, defending champion Pogacar placed third on the day. However, Vingegaard and his teammate Primoz Roglic only lost eight and nine seconds respectively to the Slovene.
Adam Yates (Ineos Grenadiers) was 16 seconds slower than Pogacar in 13, his teammate Geraint Thomas was two seconds off and Bora – hansgrohe captain Aleksandr Vlasov was 24 seconds back on Pogacar in 21st place in the time trial.
However, Lampaert and his team had to accept a small drop of bitterness in the evening: Sport Director Tom Steels tested positive for Corona and therefore had to leave the Tour de France.
