Tour de Burgos: Philippe Gilbert’s rant on the route of the 2nd stage

This Wednesday, a big fall occurred during the 2nd stage of the Tour de Burgos. A fall due to a speed bump. Philippe Gilbert, representative of the riders for the Athletes’ Commission, took the opportunity to give a rant on the chosen course.

If falls are part of cycling, everything must be done to avoid them. Start by establishing a course without too much danger. This was not the case this Wednesday during the last kilometers of the 2nd stage of the Tour de Burgos which saw the peloton fall due to a speed bump.

This fall does not please Philippe Gilbert who as the riders’ representative for the Athletes’ Commission took the opportunity to give a rant on his social networks.

I join the riders who fell victim to the Tour de Burgos. I defend the safety of athletes and denounce this kind of breach! I asked the UCI to have a protocol for the recognition, control and validation of routes and especially arrivals, but this is still not in place. Unfortunately the runners are always the victims of this negligence. It’s time for safety issues to be taken seriously and changed for the good of cycling.

Let’s hope that this time, the leaders of the UCI have understood the lesson well and will take note of it.
