Toulon was not attractive but nevertheless took the upper hand over Stade Français in Mayol (19-5). A victory propelling the RCT onto the Top 14 podium.
On the occasion of its last outing of the year at Mayol, Toulon scored a double blow. Superior to Stade Français (19-5), the XV de la Rade doubled its victim of the day in the rankings to climb to the third step of the Top 14 podium. A difficult victory however. Never able to get clear testing opportunities or outscore the capital club, Pierre Mignoni’s men were only able to breathe a sigh of relief in the last five minutes.
In a forward style, in percussion one meter from the line, the speedy winger of the All Blacks, Leicester Fainga’anuku gave the RCT an advantage in the final score (19-5, 75th). Earlier in this generally strategic and not very exciting part, only winger Peniasi Dakuwaqa found the way to the goal for the Pink Soldiers (9-5, 47th). “We’re having trouble scoring but it’s important to win once morest a team fighting with us in the standings. We are fighting with them. In fact, we are doing a great job in front of our audience who responded,” reacted Charles Ollivon at the microphone of Canal+ following the game.
Paris threatened by Toulouse and Castres
Stade Français did not seize the opportunity to come back to level with Racing 92 at the top of the Top 14. Now 5th, the Parisians also remain under threat from Toulouse and Castres which might, in the event of combined success, dislodge them from the top 6. Next year, the team now coached by Laurent Labit will host Clermont to try to return to victory during the 12th day. Toulon will, for its part, visit the red lantern, Montpellier.
