That’s what it’s about

  • Basketball star Mitchell Robinson decided on a touching gesture.

  • The 25-year-old has taken in his former high school coach.

  • The 70-year-old’s wife had previously died of cancer.

This story is actually perfect for Christmas. But it happened a few weeks ago. It’s about two very different friends. On the one hand there is Mitchell Robinson, basketball star for the famous New York Knicks. The 2.13 m tall giant shows no mercy to his opponents in the NBA. But privately he is very gentle.

On the other hand, there is William “Butch” Stockton, Robinson’s former coach in high school. In September, Stockton suffered a serious blow of fate: after 31 years of marriage, his wife Dawn died of cancer at the age of 70. Basketball player Robinson visited Dawn in the hospital every day. A great friendship developed between him and the Stocktons.

He takes care of the dogs

After the funeral, 25-year-old Robinson approached his former coach and made a suggestion. “He said, ‘Hey Coach, there’s no reason for you to stay here in Louisiana anymore. Come with me to New York, have a good time and get back on track knowing how much you loved your wife. ‘It’s a great situation, I can’t thank Mitchell enough,’ said Stockton. So he and Robinson are now roommates.

The two probably don’t see each other that often, because the basketball player travels around a lot with the Knicks, and then Stockton takes care of his dogs. “He’s a great guy, he helped me get to where I am now,” said the NBA professional. Stockton used to help him, now he is helping him. Stockton will definitely stay in Robinson’s apartment until the end of the year, according to media reports.

Stockton coached at high schools, colleges and universities for more than 40 years and was inducted into the St. Bernard Sports Hall of Fame. He celebrated a total of 597 victories, but once said: “The victories are great, but seeing how the young people get better is much more important.” And: “You can’t let a good player be good, you have to make him want to be great.”
