Published in 1981, “Totto-chan at the Window” is an autobiographical work written by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi about her memories with the principal, Mr. Kobayashi, and her friends she met at Tomoe Gakuen, a school in Tokyo that she transferred to in the first grade of elementary school. A sequel to the story was also published in October this year.

The lively images of children growing up in a free school atmosphere have become familiar and have been passed down from generation to generation, and according to publisher Kodansha, it has been translated into more than 20 languages. As of the end of September this year, the circulation in Japan and abroad has reached 25,113,862 copies.

On the 14th of this month, Kuroyanagi was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the “most published autobiography by a single author” and was presented with a certificate.

Kuroyanagi said, “I didn’t originally intend to write an autobiography, but I wrote it purely out of a desire to write about Professor Kobayashi and my childhood, so I’m really happy that it was recognized. I hope that small children and young people will continue to read this book and think, “It’s okay to think as freely as Professor Kobayashi does,” he said.
